Traffic solutions

The culture in Miami Lakes no longer is built around focusing on the next week, or month, or election cycle. We’re focusing on future generations. It’s a big-picture approach, and part of that change is adjusting the way we think about our town’s mobility. How do our residents go to work, drop off kids at school, pick up groceries, and do everyday activities without getting stuck in traffic?

Traffic circle

I have been watching the construction of the traffic circle at South Miami Avenue and Southwest Sixth Street from my home window across the river. It is very dangerously constructed.

Giving Thanks

On Thanksgiving Day, what I’m thankful for may not be the traditional things such as a home to live in and food to eat, but I know that it is important to me.

Tax bill’s effect on higher education

The recently passed House bill taxes the value of tuition discounts offered by colleges and universities to the spouses and children of their employees. The bill places an excise tax on private college endowments of $250,000 per student. Beyond the bill, student loan rates are increasing and grants decreasing.

Judge Hoeveler’s life and legacy remembered

Thirty years ago, I saluted Judge Bill Hoeveler in my Sunday column in the Herald as the “quintessential judge,” respected throughout the legal profession, from jurors to law clerks, and even convicted criminals slapped with stiff sentences in his court. We have been reminded of all this in recent days as his life and legacy have been honored by so many who were associated with the judge over the years.

Tony Dungy: Be a hero, adopt a child

November is National Adoption Month, and I hope this spirit remains strong in our hearts. Just as many families leaned on neighbors’ hospitality for shelter in the wake of the hurricane, many children across Florida are waiting for someone to become their hero through foster care or adoption.

Revitalizing Miami’s urban green spaces

Like so many cities across America, Miami is experiencing a period of rapid growth. Booming real estate development, a growing population and expanding infrastructure are all part of the trend. But forgotten among the new high-rises and shopping centers are the natural green-spaces that offer a clue to Miami’s simpler past, a welcome escape from its hectic present and a natural buffer to mitigate future challenges like storm surge and flooding.
